Bill Burhans Ph.D.
Professor William ‘Bill’ Burhans is a senior cancer scientist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. Bill hails from Vermont, and was largely educated at University of Vermont that still claims a large part of his heart. His areas of research have largely focused on DNA replication as well as responses of cancer and other cells to elevated levels of glucose. Bill is also a member of AnCan’s Advisory Board.
In 2013 Bill was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer caused in part by an inherited mutation in the BRCA 2 gene. Ironically, Bill’s lab had been studying DNA damage responses requiring BRCA proteins and he has responded to drugs targeting BRCA and related mutations that the lab was studying.
Bill continues to perform research; he also writes & speaks about prostate cancer genetics, offers patient advocacy, and snow shoes in winter then kayaks in summer – both in Vermont.
