Howard Wolinsky

Advisory Board Member/ AS Prostate Cancer Moderator

Howard Wolinsky, a Chicago-based freelance medical journalist, was the Chicago Sun-Times medical writer for nearly 30 years. He is an adjunct journalism professor at Northwestern University and has taught at the University of Chicago, DePaul, and Harvard.

Diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer in 2010, Howard has since become a national advocate and ‘poster boy’ for the active surveillance protocol that defers intrusive treatment. He now writes a regular column, “A Patient’s Journey,” for MedPage Today that often highlights issues around AS.

Wolinsky’s health writing has twice been nominated for a Pulitzer and recognized by the National Press Club and the American Bar Association amongst many others. Wolinsky is co-author of “The Serpent on the Staff: The Unhealthy Politics of the American Medical Association,” and the best-selling “Healthcare Online for Dummies” with his wife, Judi.
