Herbert ‘Herb’ Geller PhD

1945-2023

Herbert Geller leads a neurobiology lab at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD that works to improve therapies for brain and spinal cord injuries.  He joined NIH after retiring as Professor of Pharmacology and Neurology at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where he identified novel mechanisms of topoisomerase inhibitor drugs as anticancer agents.

Diagnosed with denovo metastatic prostate cancer in 2019, Herb is optimistic about future therapies. He has mentored many junior scientists and clinicians and takes great joy in their success.  Herb takes equivalent satisfaction supporting fellow members of his “Reluctant Brotherhood”.

Herb lives in Chevy Chase, MD with his wife, daughter and two cats.  When not in the lab, he enjoys running, cooking (and eating!), hitting up his wine cellar and sailing on the Chesapeake.
