AnCan’s fave, Lindsey Byrne teams with JnJ to explain BRCA!

For those that have been around AnCan for a while, the name Lindsey Byrne should be familiar. Lindsey is a Genetic Counselor at The Ohio State University (James) Comprehensive Cancer Center who specializes in prostate cancer. Click this link, and you’ll see everything she has done with AnCan!

Lindsey recently participated with Janssen Biotech, soon to be referred to as just Johnson & Johnson (JnJ), to make 3 short videos on the implications of the BRCA gene mutation for prostate cancer. This is part of a non-branded education effort as JnJ introduces its newly approved single pill, AKEEGA, that combines PARP-Inhibitor niraparib with ARSI, abiraterone acetate. Lindsey doesn’t just talk the talk; she walks the walk – ask her patient, frequent AnCan participant, Frank Fabish pictured together right. AnCan, btw, is also indirectly connected to panelist GU med onc Cora Sternberg, who went to grade school with one of our gents, and was a good family friend of another.

If the video seems a little stiff, that’s because it has to be fully scripted to meet FDA requirements for the manufacturers. That said, the information is good, understandable and accurate – although it may leave out important additional information AnCan would impart. So if you know very little about BRCA, and want to understand it better, we recommend watching these 3 short videos that you can do in les than 20 minutes. Two short caveats:

  • even if you don’t have prostate cancer, but your condition has a risk for BRCA mutations, the videos may be helpful. PARP-Inhibitors alone are often a treatment option when BRCA is present in any cancer.
  • in full disclosure, JnJ is a significant AnCan financial sponsor. However, JnJ neither requested nor required us to promote these videos.

AnCan Advisory Board Member Honored Nationally

Last night Invitae and the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) honored our amazing Advisory Board Member and Genetic Counselor, Lindsey Byrne, as one of the 14 Finalists for the Genetic Counselor of the Year Award during the National Society of Genetic Counselors Annual Conference in Nashville, TN.

While Lindsey was not selected amongst the top 3, both we and she were honored Lindsey was invited to the Awards Ceremony. Nominated by our AnCan Advanced Prostate Cancer Group regular, Frank Fabish, who seeks his care at The Ohio State The James Comprehensive Cancer Center where Lindsey works as a Counselor and Professor, Frank and his wife Gail have benefitted and much enjoyed their consults with Lindsey. She is one of the very few genetic counselors who specializes in working with genitourinary and prostate cancer patients.  Lindsey sent us a pix from the Awards Ceremony that has our Star in the foreground with nominator and nominee behind!

Lindsey has hosted and appeared in AnCan webinars as you see below. She also LOVES promoting our cause!

Webinar: Optimizing Sleep, Exercise, and Nutrition in Prostate Cancer

On May 31st, we hosted a webinar full of great information for not just prostate cancer patients, but for all! Titled “Optimizing Sleep, Exercise, and Nutrition in Prostate Cancer“, we learned best practices for the foods we eat, to how sleep apnea can impact our whole health.

The program features Dr. Stacy Loeb, professor of Urology and Population Health at the New York University School of Medicine and the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Dr. Justin Gregg, Assistant Professor of Urology and Health Disparities Research at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, of UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Gregg discusses his research on diet. Dr. Loeb discusses her research on a plant-based diet, sleep, and exercise.

Editor’s Note: Dr. Stacy Loeb and colleagues at NYU Langone Health are doing a research study about sleep and lifestyle for men with prostate cancer and their partners and/or family members.
Participation involves visiting a website designed by the study team with recommendations about sleep, nutrition and exercise, completing online surveys, wearing a wrist watch to measure activity for a total of two weeks, visiting a website, and two telephone calls with the study team. Gift cards will be provided as reimbursement for study completion.

The TALK – Inherited Mutations

We had our first The TALK, a series of webinars addressing how families speak to each other about their health conditions, of 2021! On Wednesday March 31st, we were honored to have many “pairs” of different types talk about inherited mutations.

With opening commentary and resources from Melissa Rosen (Sharsheret) and Lisa Schlager (FORCE), Rick then introduced moderator extraordinaire, Lindsey Byrne!

We met Ilana Feuchter, with mom, Rozzie Brilliant (BRCA), Peter Kafka, with son Joel Kafka (Lynch mutation, MSH6, and somatic BRCA), sisters Karin Roseman and Stefanie Tsantilis (BRCA), and Dr. Pamela Munster, and with son, Max Daud (BRCA). They shared open and honestly about their own “talks”, and shared many relatable experiences.

We sincerely thank our medical experts, panelists, and partners: UCSF Center for BRCA Research, FORCE, The James The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, NOCC, Sharsheret, and Bag It Cancer. Many thanks to Myovant Sciences for sponsoring.

Special Presentation: Genetics Counseling and Prostate Cancer

Special Presentation: Genetics Counseling and Prostate Cancer

On February 3rd, we had the most pleasure of hosting Lindsey Byrne, MS, CGC  (Licensed Genetic Counselor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center) at our Active Surveillance Virtual Support Group. She is one of the few genetic counselors in the United States specializing in prostate cancer. Genetic counseling and testing are not only important for men with prostate cancer but to their children, siblings and potentially other family members. The information presented can benefit anyone in the Prostate Cancer arena, not just AS!

We here at AnCan want to sincerely thank Lindsey for providing this amazing resource to our community.
